Abstract

The reputation of any Institute (as well as of any social learning) depends not only on the books published in it, but оn scholars which create them. The author of the article writes of its own academic evolution which comprised studies of British and American literature (T.S. Eliot a.o.), literature and culture of Russian emigration of the «first wave» (Gazdanov, Nabokov, Varshavsky a.o.), mechanism of intercultural communication, imagology, the history of Lev Tolstoy reception in Great Britain, works of outstanding Russian literary and cultural critic Valery Zemskov, practice of literary translation. She makes a conclusion that it happened so that her activities were responses to the requirements of Russian and world humanitarian science, but as well they were dictated by the type of her creative personality: according to the classification of British philosopher and historian of culture I. Berlin in his famous essay «The Hedgehog and the fox», she was a foх, but not without some qualities of a hedgehog.
