The article is devoted to the historical origins of the discourse about modernity in German literature and its transformation in the energy field of the Russian revolution of 1917. Distinguishing the spheres of social-political and spiritual-mental activity of a person, the author emphasizes the fundamental role of the concept of “revolution of the spirit” in the self-determination of not only Russian, but as German modernism as well. In both cases, the revolutionary discourse of freedom, which is the result of a utopian interpretation of historical events, comes into sharp conflict with the reality of public life and turns into a discourse of disillusionment with the ideology of modernism.
