The article examines the largest subculture in the post-Soviet space of the late XX – early XXI centuries and a part of Russian pop music – rap. The integration of this phenomenon of foreign pop culture into Russian culture has given rise to such an oxymoron as “Russian rap”. The paper criticizes this phenomenon. “Russian rap” is seen as nothing more than a set of cliches based on the poetic and musical tradition of Russian folk art, from urban romance to thieves, authorʼs and rock songs. As part of one big genre called “Russian shanson”. This is the phenomenon of the continuation of the traditions of the authorʼs folklore from the first person, a new folk song that reproduces the surrounding reality, its cultural meanings, through language and the semantic boundaries indicated by it.
