Abstract

The article analyses the image system of Nicholas Roerich in the context of artistic and aesthetic features of Art Nouveau. The poetic principles of interpretation of the artistic image, underlying symbolism as a phenomenon of creative worldview, are considered as a source of those plastic and semantic searches, which determined the individual character of Nicholas Roerich’s visual language among the artists of Russian modernism. A special place in the article is given to the problem of the formation of the master’s iconography in connection with the understanding of the category of time in its different hypostases – real-historical and imaginary – that became more complex at the turn of the XIX–XX centuries. The main emphasis in the study is made on Nicholas Roerich as an artist, the pre-revolutionary period of his work can serve as one of the main keys to understanding his poetics as a whole.
