The article examines the works of N.K. Roerich dedicated to the Stone Age era in the context of the development of paleoart. N.K. Roerich’s views on the relationship between science and art, the influence of J. Ruskin’s ideas are analyzed. On the example of paintings by N.K. Roerich and V.M. Vasnetsov on the one hand and paintings by F. Kormon, L. Fevre, P. Jamen on the other hand, shows the different approach of Russian and European authors to the problem of the emergence of culture. The development of N.K. Roerich’s views on the prehistory of mankind, the transition from national Romanticism to the concept of internationality of the Stone Age is shown.
