The article examines four editions of the poem by E.P. Rostopchina “Two Meetings” (first edition – 1838), containing memories of two meetings of the young author with A.S. Pushkin. It is shown that from edition to edition the mythologized motif of the blessing of the younger by the elder, the great poet, is strengthened, and how the interpretation of meeting at the ball as a providential event is formed. The transformation of a real event into a mythology of creative continuity is scrutinized. This transformation is considered in the context of the poetess’s idea of herself as the custodian of the cultural values of the Pushkin era, which was formed in the 1850s.
