Abstract

The article undertakes a cultural analysis of Mikhail Petrovich Pogodinʼs travel diary (1844). The travelogue, consisting of four parts, gives a detailed account of the stag-es of the great European journey of its author. Pogodin focuses on the difficulties of the journey itself, provides a detailed description of his tourist routes. The author pays special attention to the meetings with foreign scientists and the state of science and education in a particular area: one of the goals of the foreign trip was to estab-lish and develop scientific contacts with foreign scientists. He is particularly inter-ested in the so-called Slavic question, the state of the Slavic studies in different countries, as well as the availability of the Slavic antiquities in public and university libraries. Pogodinʼs travel diary can be considered both as a magnificent fictional-ized travel guide, as a literary monument, and as a reflection of the rich spiritual world of the author.
