The purpose of article is to examine the desire to travel as part of the mental charac-teristic of the 1960s Soviet generation. For the Soviet society of the 1960s travel acts as a metaphor of freedom in culture. The study is primarily based on the analysis of the elements of art culture (fine arts and cinema), which most vividly represent the image-ontological model of the sixties. The study is conducted to determine the role of travel in the mental code of the 1960s generation. The author concludes that trav-el became not only one of the metaphors of the free search for new knowledge, experiences, insights and values to the 1960s generation, but also became a way to overcome the framework of the “total Soviet everyday life”.
