The article discusses the problems arising in the course of graphisation of modern minority languages on the example of three minority languages of Great Britain (Ulster Scots, Cornish and Scots). As working out orthographic rules requires a balance between principles, which often contradict each other, constructing a written standard is a result of socio-linguistic engineering. Consequently, the necessary condition of success is active participation in standardization of official structures and public organizations.
