Abstract

The given article is based on the author’s translation of the treaty “The Measurement of the Romans” by Diego de Sagredo offers an academic commentary in the context of Sagredo’s aims, the stylistic singularities of the text, and the artistic material, the role of the classical sources which have influenced on Sagredo’s new original ideas concerning the stylistic of the Spanish architecture of the 16th century. The essence of the treaty is built on the establishment of the truth of harmonic coordination of the Roman measures: norm is the result of the practical use in architecture. The contents of the work address the reader to the theoretical Vitruvianism. This is the innovational Sagredo’s role, the artist who theoretically grounded the transition from the medieval Gothic tradition to the new course of the artistic trends of the Spanish Renaissance.
