Abstract

The paper discusses the expeditions by Gerbert of Aurillac (circa 945–1003) and their represen-tation in his epistolary corpus. Gerbert, a monk, reformer of the quadrivium, bishop of Ravenna and Reims, and later Pope Sylvester II, was a key figure of the Ottonian Renaissance. His correspondence, consisting of 200 letters written in Latin, traces his career path and the movements across Europe – from abbot of the monastery of Bobbio to bishop of Ravenna. Gerbert actively interacted with political and church leaders, his expeditions were linked to academic activities and motivated by ful-filling the commissions of his patrons. The paper emphasizes how this scholarly monk of the late 10th century experienced and evaluated his movements within Christian Europe, as well as the typical circumstances that accompanied such expe-ditions during that time.
