The first stage in the formation of the Indian religious space was characterized by the monopoly of Hinduism with the intensification of competition from the Buddhism. The second stage was the dominance of Islam, supported by state power, with the predominance of Hindus. The third stage was the formation of communalism associated with the competition between Hinduism, Islam and Christianity. The present stage is characterized by attempts of Hinduism to obtain the status of the state religion.
