The article deals with current issues related to the functioning of the modern Russian language. The subject of the research is the online publications of social networks and media publishers, which create the language space. The paper describes the modern social and cultural reality in conjunction with the historical past, and attempts to analyze the existing language space. The contemporary social and political life sees activization in trends associated with globalization, on the one hand, and awareness of national and cultural identity in the information society, on the other hand. In the conditions of «competition» between the two indicated directions – globalization and national and cultural self-identification – language acquires special significance, accumulating and consolidating in its units knowledge and experience gained over many centuries; embodying the national mentality, the uniqueness of the people’s philosophy and their psychology; serving as a means of preserving, strengthening and developing the national culture. The paper highlights critical aspects of the modern language space and outlines ways of solving these problems, in particular, the critical situation associated with the «barbarization» of Russian speech.
